People can be all around us while a connection still feels out of reach.

For eleven months, I walked across Europe alone.

Some days brought conversations and unexpected encounters. Others brought hours with nobody to talk to.

**I could not control who I met, how people responded or whether an encounter became meaningful.**

The same is true in ordinary life.

Loneliness can begin in very different ways:

Someone important is no longer in our life.
Moving removes us from a familiar community.
Retirement or remote work eliminates daily contact.
Illness makes socialising difficult.
We meet people but rarely feel understood by them.

But once we are lonely, other beliefs can limit what happens next:

“I never meet the right person.”
“If people wanted to see me, they would contact me.”
“Friendships should happen naturally.”
“Everyone already has their own circle.”
“My family owes it to me to call and visit.”
“It is too late to form close relationships.”
“My circumstances need to change first.”

**Any of these may contain some truth but if we accept them as facts they can stop us from exploring other ways to connect**.

## The Perspective Shift

> ***Loneliness may begin with circumstances we did not choose. But it can be prolonged by assumptions we no longer question.***

Fighting loneliness does not mean blaming ourselves or pretending that every barrier can be overcome.

It means examining the beliefs shaping what we think we can do, should do and are willing to do.

**Some will prove to be genuine constraints.**
**Others may reveal that we are partly keeping ourselves lonely.**

Walk your talk,
Franck
