“My boss refused. So I never learned.”

During the Tour de Gaule, I met a man around my age who told me he couldn’t speak English.

He told me:
“In our time, English wasn’t important at school, so I didn’t study it.
Later, I asked my boss to organise classes.
He refused, so I never learned.”

That sentence stayed with me because of the mindset behind it.

The man had never asked: “How can I learn English?”

He had asked: “Who is going to teach me English?”

The Perspective Shift

“How?” expands possibilities. “Who?” transfers responsibility.

The difference seems small, but it changes everything.

The same pattern appears throughout our lives:
School teaches us.
The company trains us.
The government prepares our retirement.
The doctor manages our health.

Someone else is expected to take the lead.

Not because we are lazy.

Because it is the default path we have been taught to follow.

His employer’s refusal was a genuine obstacle. But it did not have to remain the final answer.

Every time we outsource responsibility, we also outsource part of our potential.
