![A roadside place serving food encountered during Franck’s walk across Europe.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/7d/01/7d0190e6-0d1d-48b4-ad5a-f339e47871ca/content/images/2026/08/IMG_2086.jpg)

The problem is not always finding an acceptable option. It is knowing when to stop looking.

On the road, I usually have an ideal time to stop and eat.
The problem is that I never know when I will next find somewhere open.

So when I pass somewhere serving food a little too early, I am torn.

Do I stop now, even though I am not particularly hungry?
Or continue and hope to find somewhere at a better time?

Sometimes I keep walking and find the perfect place.
Sometimes I find nothing later and regret passing the only opportunity I had.

But when I make the decision, I am not choosing between two places.

**I am choosing between a place that exists and another that might exist.**

That small dilemma appears in much more important parts of life.

We consider a job but wonder whether a better offer might come.
We find a suitable house but keep searching for the perfect one.
We meet someone with many of the qualities we value but hesitate because someone more compatible might exist.

The option in front of us has visible compromises.
The imagined alternative does not.

We can see what is inconvenient about stopping early, what the house lacks or what is imperfect about the person we know.

**The hypothetical alternative can contain everything we want because we have not yet encountered its limitations.**

And as long as something better might exist, no real option can end the search unless we decide what is enough.

## The Perspective Shift

> **Many decisions remain open not because no option is good enough, but because we never decided what would be good enough for us to stop looking.**

Before searching, we tend to ask:
**“What is the best option?”**

A more useful question may be:
**“What would an option need to offer for me to choose it and stop looking?”**

That does not mean accepting the first possibility or lowering our standards.

It means defining our standards before comparison keeps moving them.

What must the option provide?
Which compromises are acceptable?
What information do I genuinely need?

Once an option meets those conditions, continuing to search is no longer necessarily careful decision-making.

**It may simply be an inability to close the decision.**

Sometimes the choice we need to make is not which option to select.
It is when we are prepared to stop choosing.

Walk your talk,
Franck
