Whose life is it?

When I talk about my long walks, some people worry about my health or what might happen along the way. Others cannot see why I would put myself through the pain and discomfort.
They try to change my mind.
I listen but we are not necessarily weighing the same things.
They see what could happen to me if I go.
I also see what I would miss if I stayed.
The discoveries. The encounters. The satisfaction of attempting something that matters to me.
A choice can reassure someone else and still leave me deeply dissatisfied.
This happens far beyond walking.
You want to leave a secure job, move abroad or pursue an uncertain project. Someone who cares about you wants you to stay safe.
Their concern is real. So is the cost of abandoning what you want.
The Perspective Shift
Someone can want the best for you without wanting the same life you want for yourself.
Their concern deserves consideration. Their approval does not have to be a condition for your decision.
I have to examine the risks, take responsibility for my choice and accept its consequences, including the effects on others.
But I do not have to persuade everyone that the walk is right for me before I can take the first step.
Walk your talk,
Franck
