A couple of hikers I met in Germany thought I had planned the spontaneity out of my walk across Europe.

They had a point.

I had mapped more than 300 stages and booked all my accommodations in advance. I could not easily change direction, remain somewhere I liked or follow an unexpected opportunity.

That would have been a serious limitation if my primary purpose had been to travel freely. But it was not.

My objective was to walk 6,000 kilometres across Europe and finish.

Planning each stage reduced uncertainty and removed hundreds of decisions from the road. Knowing where I had to reach each evening also removed one possible excuse for not getting up and walking the following morning.

The difference between the hikers and me becomes clearer when structure and spontaneity are placed at opposite ends of an axis:

![An axis from structure to spontaneity, showing Franck’s choice closer to structure to ensure completion and the hikers’ preference closer to spontaneity.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/7d/01/7d0190e6-0d1d-48b4-ad5a-f339e47871ca/content/images/2026/09/Screenshot-2026-09-05-at-23.04.00.png)

Neither position was inherently better.

Their position suited the way they wanted to travel.
Mine served what I was trying to accomplish.

Every position has a price. More structure cost me spontaneity. More spontaneity might have reduced my chances of finishing.

The mistake would be to assume that one position is universally better.

## The Perspective Shift

> ***There is no universally right position on most dimensions of life. The position that is right for us is the one that best serves what matters to us and whose price we are willing to pay.***

My walk included travel, but it was not primarily a tourism trip. I had not planned the adventure out of it.

**For me, the plan was what made the adventure possible.**
